Idea for a Berkshire Conference Roundtable

January 9, 2007

submitted by Amy Kesselman (kesselma@newpaltz.edu)

I know its kind of last minute but I've just emerged from the end of semester avalanche of papers and have focussed on the Berkshire Conference. I know many of you are already committed to sessions but I thought I'd throw out my idea anyway and see if anyone is interested and available. I would like to organize a roundtable about methods and sources for writing the history of ah now what words to use--feminism of the 1960's and 70's. Some of the issues I would like to explore are: the problems of writing about people who are still alive; the ways oral histories and memoirs reflect not only the periods they are about but the periods in which they are created; the differences between the perspectives of historians of different generations eg the questions we ask, the topics we focus on; how the meanings of divisions within the movements have changed since the 70's ( this was partially sparked by the discussion on this discussion list about the meaning of radical feminism). Write to me if you're interested; the deadline for submissions is February 1.
