"Dykes on Bikes" has been a mainstay of many LGBT parades since the mid-1970s. From San Francisco to New York City, and *many* points in between, Dykes on Bikes lead off the parade. According to the San Francisco Women's Motorcycle Contingent, "Dykes on Bikes began in 1976 with a small contingent of women riding in the SF Pride Parade." The organization is still fighting the US Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name in order to keep it from being used for commercial or personal gain, but the Office continues to turn them down because "dyke" is deemed vulgar.
