Barbara Gittings, In Honor and Memory

On Sunday, February 18, 2007, pioneering LGBT activist Barbara Gittings died from recurrent breast cancer. Gittings participated in and led some of the earliest demonstrations in support of fair employment practices for lesbian and gay workers. She was also a leading activist in Daughters of Bilitis, serving as editor of The Ladder (the DOB newsletter/journal) for many years. We honor the inspirational life of Barbara Gittings and invite you to log in to the site and offer tributes and memories here.
Gittings figures prominently in various historical works, including David K. Johnson, The Lavender Scareand Marcia Gallo, _Different Daughters: A History of the Daughters of Bilitis and the Birth of the Lesbian Rights Movement   reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle on 10/30/2006 here.
